Sainsbury's sales boosted by warm weather

Sainsbury’s has said sales of clothes, summer food and paddling pools helped speed up growth in the past few months.The UK’s second biggest supermarket chain reported that like-for-like sales excluding fuel – which strip out the impact of new stores – grew by 2.3%.Chief executive Mike Coupe said the warm weather helped to grow sales in its clothing and merchandise unit.Demand for deals on British strawberries and its summer eating range also boosted grocery sales.Mr Coupe said: “The market is competitive and we continue to manage cost price pressures closely. “Our strategy is delivering and we are well placed to navigate the external environment.”Sainsbury’s latest sales figures mark an acceleration from the previous quarter when sales grew by just 0.3%. The growth was also slightly stronger than expected, with analysts having forecast like-for-like sales to grow 2%.
